Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide based on the ACTH(4-10) fragment with the same Pro-Gly-Pro stabilising extension used in Selank. It lacks the corticotropic activity of the parent hormone, which is central to its use as a neuropeptide research tool.
Reported to increase BDNF and NGF expression and to modulate dopaminergic and serotonergic turnover in rodent brain tissue, while showing no measurable adrenal stimulation. Its inability to activate melanocortin-2 receptors is a defining feature.

Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation on the lyophilized cake. Add sterile or bacteriostatic water slowly down the inner wall of the vial, then let the powder dissolve without agitation; swirl gently if needed. Do not shake or vortex — shear forces denature peptide secondary structure and cause foaming that traps material on the stopper.
As a sealed lyophilized powder the material is stable for extended periods at -20 °C when kept desiccated and protected from light. Once in solution, stability shortens considerably: aqueous stocks are normally held at 2-8 °C for short term work or aliquoted and frozen for longer storage. Repeated freeze-thaw cycling is the most common cause of measurable potency loss.
