What a certificate of analysis actually is

A certificate of analysis is a record of specific tests performed on a specific batch of material at a specific time, by a named laboratory, using stated methods. Every element of that sentence carries weight. Change the batch, the method or the laboratory and you have a different document making a different claim.

The most common misreading treats a COA as a general quality seal attached to a product. It is not. It attaches to a lot. A supplier who publishes one certificate and applies it to every subsequent batch is making a claim the document does not support, and the lot number is the field that exposes this immediately.

The second most common misreading treats the purity percentage as self-explanatory. It is not. The figure is method-dependent, and a certificate that omits the method conditions is asking to be taken on trust rather than read.

The fields that matter, in order

Start with identity: product name, sequence where given, and the lot or batch number. The lot number is what allows the document to be matched to the vial in front of you; without that match, the certificate is describing someone else's material.

Move to method: instrument, column, gradient programme, detection wavelength, injection load and integration or reporting threshold. These determine what the analysis was capable of seeing. A high number generated by a method with limited resolving power says less than a slightly lower number from a method that separated everything.

Then results: chromatographic purity, mass confirmation against theoretical molecular weight, and any additional testing such as water content, residual solvent or endotoxin where applicable. Finally, provenance: the testing laboratory, the date of analysis, and the signature or authorisation of the report.

A certificate that answers all of those is a document you can evaluate. One that supplies a percentage, a logo and a date is a document you can only believe or disbelieve.

Frequently asked questions

Does a certificate of analysis apply to every vial a supplier sells?
No. A certificate documents one batch. It applies only to vials from the lot number printed on the document, which is why the lot number on the label must match the certificate you are reading.
What is missing from a certificate that only shows a purity percentage?
The method conditions, the reporting threshold, the mass confirmation and the lot linkage. Without those, the figure cannot be evaluated or compared with any other supplier's result.
Are your certificates issued by a third party?
