Oxytocin is a nine-residue cyclic neuropeptide with an intramolecular disulfide bridge, and was the first peptide hormone to be chemically synthesised. That synthesis is a landmark in peptide chemistry and the molecule is still used as a methodological benchmark.
Agonist at the oxytocin receptor, a Gq-coupled GPCR signalling through phospholipase C and intracellular calcium release. Cross-reactivity at vasopressin V1a receptors is well documented and is routinely controlled for in selectivity experiments.

Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation on the lyophilized cake. Add sterile or bacteriostatic water slowly down the inner wall of the vial, then let the powder dissolve without agitation; swirl gently if needed. Do not shake or vortex — shear forces denature peptide secondary structure and cause foaming that traps material on the stopper.
The disulfide bridge is the vulnerable feature: reducing agents, alkaline pH and elevated temperature all promote ring opening and loss of activity.
