MOTS-c is a 16-residue peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, one of a small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides identified through alternative open reading frame analysis. Its discovery is frequently cited as evidence that the mitochondrial genome participates in retrograde signalling.
Under metabolic stress the peptide translocates to the nucleus and is reported to modulate AMP-activated protein kinase signalling and the folate-methionine cycle, altering the expression of stress-response genes. It is studied as a retrograde mitochondrial-to-nuclear messenger rather than a receptor ligand.

Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation on the lyophilized cake. Add sterile or bacteriostatic water slowly down the inner wall of the vial, then let the powder dissolve without agitation; swirl gently if needed. Do not shake or vortex — shear forces denature peptide secondary structure and cause foaming that traps material on the stopper.
As a sealed lyophilized powder the material is stable for extended periods at -20 °C when kept desiccated and protected from light. Once in solution, stability shortens considerably: aqueous stocks are normally held at 2-8 °C for short term work or aliquoted and frozen for longer storage. Repeated freeze-thaw cycling is the most common cause of measurable potency loss.
